The clock is ticking: Insights from a BloqSens AG-supported semester project

Basel, Switzerland – 23 January 2025 – As a practice partner, BloqSens AG supported the semester project of Ursina Marseiler, a master’s student at the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH).

The objective of the project was an in-depth exploration of the needs of relevant Swiss companies regarding the digital battery passport which will be mandatory in the EU beginning in 2027 for lithium-ion batteries. From then on, companies who are active in the EU market are obliged to provide a battery passport accessible via QR code on their products. This way, the sustainability and circularity in the lifecycle of batteries is to be increased, since the battery passport allows authorised companies to access information relevant to them. For example, a company specialised in second life activities can transform the battery from an electric car for use a stationary energy storage for electricity. This transformation is highly simplified thanks to the battery passport, as the necessary information regarding performance capacity remaining after the first life (in the electric car) can be accessed in the passport. In this way, sustainable business models can be specifically developed and implemented.

Since many Swiss companies, for which lithium-ion batteries are relevant, either acquire or sell these batteries on the EU market, the battery passport will become relevant for them even though Switzerland does not have corresponding legislation so far.
